[ in new amsterdam, families only have one child. a home with two children is unusual — but as daisy has found out, the two girls are friends. they'd been having a sleepover.

they're both too scared to speak yet, still trying as little children do to wake up from their nightmares rather than accept them as fact, so daisy isn't sure whether both have lost families today or not. one could be morningstar and the other not — but is that worse, somehow? she's not sure, but it's not her call to make. gaby and the others will decide what to do with the kids once things have calmed down; right now, all daisy can do is help them get to the safehouse, and ensure nothing else happens to them along the way. ]

Two floors down, and the street's to the west.

[ soft confirmation, though no less serious; to her right, one of the girls latches on to her free hand; the other moves to illya's other side, reaching up with clammy hands for something firm to hold onto.

if this wasn't the middle of a rescue operation in what is swiftly becoming a battleground, they might just look like a weird little family — a thought that daisy shoves back down into the recesses of her mind as soon as it comes up. not the time, not the place. definitely not the kind of thing she wants to think about right now.

the staircase is empty. the building's long been swept, the soldiers having moved on, so she doesn't expect to see someone. the street, as it turns out, is a different story. as they approach the door, the silhouette of a soldier's armor glints in the bright sunlight. ]

We have to go another way.
