[ It’s not the most existentially horrific theory. The WAU rummaged around memories to worse effect.

But of course the part she soldiers on through immediately brings back to the surface that they’re copies of dead people. The only vivid mental image Simon has to associate with that statement is of Catherine’s actual body, with her bloodied skull, her poignantly outstretched arm, meters away from her goal. Unfortunately for her, it makes it an unappealing enough topic to briefly table his questions for tangentially-related Catherine questions. ]

And you got human. [ This is either a revelation about Catherine or a hole in her theory, right? That’s for her to know, probably. ]

What would you rather have? What would be the perfect— [ he falters — because he can’t even be so specific as to say ‘body’, it seems — and lands on the alternative a little like an out-of-touch parent trying to understand and also properly pronounce this thing their kid is into. ] Existence.

[ What little she’s said about it is hard to even fathom wanting, but there’s no censure in his tone, or his face; only open curiosity. Personal questions about Catherine are always a crapshoot, but Simon never attempts it with diminished enthusiasm. ]
