[this is worse than explaining the night's watch. jon squints up into the sky.]

There's the red god. [jon is not actually sure he can say r'hllor, when he thinks about it.] A creature of light and fire who demands sacrifice. His priestess burnt our Heart Trees. She burnt people alive. [he sighs. he'd decided he was going to start taking melisandre more seriously, which probably means not complaining about her to men he's just met.] Criminals, mostly. Dangerous men. She did have some magic, which she says she gets from her god. I don't know. They came from across the Narrow Sea.

[a deep sigh. he glances back at cain.]

They say some of the Wildlings worship the White Walkers as gods. Horrible creatures like men made of ice. They hate everything living and wage war against us with their army of the dead. I saw one man give up his child to them. I suppose that's worship.

Then there's the Seven. Mother, Father, Maiden, Crone, Warrior, Smith, and Stranger. I never had much use for them. It's a Southron faith. They may well be your false gods; no Septon ever did magic with them that I know about. All they do is light candles and sing hymns in their Septs. My sister Sansa would know more than I do. She had a Southron mother to teach her their ways.

[he gives cain a grim, tight, ironic smile.]

How is it in your world?
