So it’s like datamining was. He’d touch a robot with a cortex chip, or a human with a blackbox, and the Data Reader would let him hear their memories. Except here he’s overwriting his panic attack by downloading this guy’s not-having-a-panic-attack. Still, the principles sound the same— ]

[ —so Simon regards him for a moment and touches his forefinger to the knuckle of the outstretched hand. And inadvertently sends him the Trojan that is the emotional contents of his psyche at any given time, of course. It’s like a diorama — there’s the sharp panic and confusion. There’s the existential insecurity, probably not totally dissimilar from Markus’s own, but newer — of being unanchored from yourself. And guilt, and an absolute yawning chasm of grief, amorphous and blurry and bewildered, like something experienced through the lens of a high fever. And all around it there's just more anxiety, a vague tapestry of leaden anticipation.

It's mostly just different flavors of bad. It's a lot to try to sift through, because Simon won't Konmari his collection of problems. ]
