After returning to the Facility a second time, Cain approached the spear and got the idea to try and remove it. Having touched it once before with Loki, he knew it wouldn't be as straightforward as pulling it out, so he enlisted the help of Fitz and Markus here. They went for an all-out simultaneous attempt -- Markus used a force field to push against the spear, Fitz tried slicing the roots, and Cain used his spatial displacement ability to dislodge the spear without any physical interaction. Markus and Fitz both suffered psychic deaths of excruciating pain and became specters. Cain, on the other hand, experienced a painless/peaceful psychic death and was absorbed into the surrounding environment, feeling at one with the Facility. The spear was not replaced after its removal.

Eventually, Peggy finds the specters of Markus and Fitz and teams up with both Riku and Sora to help bring them back. Fitz is first, and they all coordinate a plan to revive Markus and Cain shortly after. This is taking place here and is currently on-going.
