cw: injury/needle discussion

Well, it's all crash courses now. Come on.

( they're in a bit of a lull, which is nice. means they can spend some time on somethin' like this until the next wave comes in. he brings her over to a young man with his leg immobilized in one'a them futuristic casts, an' a gash along his shoulderblade that looks pretty nasty. gene speaks with him quietly a moment, an' then waves kyna to come in close. he leans into her space a bit, )

Just make sure you never tell anyone you're workin' on you're new at it. We're just animals, an' we pick up on stressors easier than the rational mind realizes. Somebody thinks you're a greenhorn they'll lose their minds over it.

( he had more than a few of his boys wave away a green medic because they wanted him. an' he always had to rip a strip off 'em later providing they survived it because how the hell else are the rookies supposed to get practice in? christ o'lordy, it can't always be him tendin' to a fella what's been busted up by shrapnel. he gives her a level look, an' then swings his attention back around to their patient. )

This here's Kyna, she's gonna help you out.

( he's pullin' a needle outta his pack as he talks, somethin' to numb the wound. he continues conversationally, )

If'n you don't mind, I'm going to explain what she's doin' as she's doin' it so's we can film it an' put it on a network for volunteers. That way, if folks are trapped away from medical help they at least have some idea of how to handle an injury. That all right by you?

( the man nods his assent, an' gene injects the numbing agent into the meat of his shoulder. then he produces a curved needle with a good grade of suture monofilament outta his pack. he threads it easy with steady hands, an' hands it over to her.

he walks her through it with the sure calm of a professional. showin' her how to feed the needle through the dermal-subdermal layer. goin' through the papillary dermis always produces the best result an' holds the best anyhow, without causin' too much undue pain or stress on the sutures fit to tear 'em. he don't ever correct her directly, just says things mildly like 'now, there's a couple things you wanna avoid when you're doin' this. notice how her stitches are nice an' tight? you want to make sure they've got some tension in 'em to hold the wound, but not so much that it pulls an' tears the skin'. ain't like the fella can see it bein' done.

when she's finished, gene shows her how to tie a surgeon's knot, an' then lets her carry on the rest of the way until it's done. then it's a matter of dressin' the wound, bandagin' it up an' seein' to it that the fella is comfortable as possible layin' on a bench of the bar. to the man: )

Thank you, sir. Appreciate your help. This'll surely help other folk muddle on through.
