[For as long as Sam's been alive, he's always had a few qualities that have made him easier to handle than Dean. He's less cantankerous and cranky, at least from day to day. He's not obnoxious and posturing. While he's had his own expectations to live up to, he's always had to deal with those expectations a different way. Dean shielded him from a lot, partly just through being Dean Winchester.
With that comes one thing: the tendency to deal with his problems. To talk about them candidly, even if he doesn't know when he's lying to himself. Because, yeah, that's a thing he does. Sometimes.
His throat catches when he sees her, remembering exactly how she died. How he made himself watch. How she got there because of him, the same way Jess did. (Memories of Jess came back to him later, but he's not surprised that Brady had a cameo in his screwed up alternate life. What a dick.)
Sam's the kind of guy who's very visibly looking for words when he hasn't spoken them yet. His eyes get a little glossy because he's also an emotional dude. Crap. Uh. Zachariah really did him some favors by giving him an incomplete story those AU go arounds, didn't he?]
Hi. [Deep as hell.] Are you headed out? That—uh—that might be best. [Wait.] I mean—if you'd like to talk. I was hoping we could talk.
