[Sometimes, Sam can't tell when Dean's avoiding a conversation. Sometimes avoiding that conversation is the status quo of their lives. They go on a hunt, they stay in the car, and they avoid anything that might cause them problems. Easy enough. That's the way things went back home. Sometimes it's easy to just forget, as a result, that something might be there, hanging over their heads. Sometimes.

But then something usually happens to break that. Sam recalls that there's something Dean's dodging. Because that's just what Dean does. And then he pushes about it, or realizes (or decides, because it's Sam) that it's a lost cause and then he goes after it from a different angle. Or Dean breaks and tells him.

It's not surprising that circumstances would change the form of that here. They're not on the road. There isn't a common goal that they share, not overall. They live together, sure, but the unspoken rules both do and don't apply as a result.

Meaning, well. Dean's avoiding him. Dean knows that he skipped some significant crap in those texts because it wasn't the time or the place. Hell, Sam should've given him a full push there so they could speed up this process. If there is a process. If they ever get to the end of it.

Knowing Dean, that's definitely a question that's gonna hang in the air.]

Apparently, they got inspired by the Shrikes and they're starting up something similar here. Kinda reminds me of signing up the right people to sell their souls so you can have a worthwhile demon army. [Which, well. Things happen.] Not great. We'll probably wanna keep our heads down for a while. [Sam in particular knows he's made a bad show of things now that he's come back. That definitely sucks.

Either way, he's halfway answering Dean's question in earnest because—because it's better. It's a part of the routine. What they need to do. He can see if there's an opening without pointing out that Dean's been avoiding him. Because pointing out that Dean's coping mechanisms are as obvious as ever has rarely gone well for him or anyone else.]
