[Callisto tends to go out of her way to avoid triggering the empathy bond, and not because she wants to hide her own feelings - if there were a way for her to share hers without any sort of reciprocation, she'd happily go around inflicting them on every Displaced that she came across. But regardless of how much she'd like the entire city to know how upset she is, she generally doesn't consider it worth the reverse: she hates feeling other people's happiness, contentment, concern, sympathy, or faith in the good things of the world. The few times she's been subjected to it, it's felt like being touched with a white-hot poker, more painful to her than any broken arm.

This one is all right, though. The empathy has her recoiling, yanking her hand back, but that grief reels her right back in, and she lands her fingertips on his knuckles again. Making people feel the way she feels is fleetingly satisfying. Finding someone who already feels the way she feels is... something else.]

And your eyes lie.

[Either because he hides his emotions more than she does, or because she's too self-centered to have noticed them on her own (some combination of both is likely), his grief isn't something she would have guessed.]
