[ there's the tiniest shift in maine's posture that tells carolina that even if she didn't necessarily help, drawing the connection between the two events didn't make anything worse. she'll take that.

when maine says something felt peaceful, she assumes he means after helping her, because that's a sensation she remembers, too. remembers something unnatural about the initial tranquility before she could sort out her head enough to feel reliefβ€” hers and maine's both.

but then she thinks (hopes) that he means to add that to what he'd just told her of what he experienced, and there's a flicker of relief clear in carolina's eyes before she catches herself. ]


It'd be nice if we could just skip to that peaceful part.

[ it would also be nice if carolina didn't have to now think about those experiences as being the result of a perpetual conflict between gods, but she knows better than to let herself slip into denial. at least when she's trying to help maine. maybe later, maybe when wash is here. ]

I'm sorry you had to go through that.
