It's from Ellie's point of view; she's wearing a gas mask, moving through a crumbling old building that might have once been a small drugstore. As she squeezes through a gap in the wall, there is a shuddering crack beneath her feet, and the floor gives way beneath her.
"Ellie!" calls a young woman's voice behind her, and Ellie turns back to reach for her, getting a glimpse of her face in the light of her flashlight, through the cover of her mask. She's Ellie's age, dark-haired and medium-skinned, her warm brown eyes wide with fright. Their hands slip together but she can't get a grip, and Ellie goes down with the collapse. She lands heavily on her back, with part of the crumbling heavy floor on top of her.
Dina -- her name comes easily through Ellie's memories -- lands heavily next to her, then immediately reaches back to start helping Ellie move to free herself, only to be alerted by a horrible clicking noise behind her. They both go utterly silent, and Dina turns around in one fluid movement, gun out, bracing her back against Ellie and the debris as the thing advances.
Clicker, Ellie's mind identifies it, the word charged with wariness and a healthy amount of fear. The fungal plates cover the creature's face. Dina carefully aims her gun, following the creature's movements with silent, deadly intent. Ellie is terrified, trapped, unable to protect her friend as she stares up at the monster.
It might've once been a woman, but it definitely isn't anymore. It clicks, opens its mouth wide, and shrieks, recognizing the humans in front of it. As it lunges, Dina shoots it twice in the face, first blowing off the fungal plates and then blowing open the skull. It collapses, writhing, and Dina turns around, lifting hard to pulls Ellie free. Ellie wheezes, getting her breath back as they both stumble to cover, and the gunshots and noise lift similar clicks and shrieks all through the lower floor.
The memory lifts, quickly, as Ellie draws them out of it. Ellie's hand is steady on hers.]
cw: violence, gore, zombie-type monsters
It'll be something new for the both of them. Ellie reaches out, palm up, and takes her hand. It's a light touch, her fingers steady.
A breath, and she'll feel her first. Curious, but braced and ready. The memory breaks over them both.
