WHO: cassian andor (evasives), daisy johnson (evite), illya kuryakin (kgbs), & jyn erso (realists) WHERE: on the train to new tokyo WHEN: october 8, mid-day WHAT: introductions are important. NOTES OR WARNINGS: tbd.
[ jyn doesn't knock because jyn told daisy they were coming so the compartment door opens with a snick and jyn just WALKS IN LIKE SHE OWNS THE PLACE. manifest destiny is just who she is as a person. ]
Do you think there will be more chocolate in our new house?
[ she doesn't remember the chocolate, she wants to remember the chocolate. ]
[ hey, honey, glad you could make it. daisy gestures to the free row opposite them (because apparently nobody had wanted to sit with the couple that was practically laying on each other in sleep, who knows) but she doesn't wait for any pleasantries before replying. ]
No. Pretty sure the free chocolate was a dream thing.
[ which is a bummer, free chocolate would be great. ]
Did you tell Cassian about the Barbie dream house yet?
[ is he surprised jyn just walked in? absolutely not. he does, however, knock on the frame anyway before he follows in after her in a much more subdued way and takes a seat as gestured. ]
[ with complete seriousness: ] Is that what they call apartments on this planet?
[ there is already a lot of talking. so much that illya just sits back and watches it all, wondering if he stays still enough, they would think him invisible.
a plan to try out later. but first, he has a question because while there are a lot of words, they are also words that do not fit together in his mind. ]
Who is Barbie?
[ he is fairly sure he hasn't met a barbie before. what a ridiculous name. ]
[ why is she in love with a russian loser from the sixties and living with two people from space who have never heard of barbie? daisy pinches the bridge of her nose and waves her hands in a vague gesture that's somewhere between "you're all stupid" and "i don't have time to explain barbie to you" ]
It's — a whole thing, don't worry about it.
[ kill her. she did not sign up to be pop culture translator. ]
Anyway, [ pointing in turn ] Illya. Cassian. Jyn. [ and then, to illya: ] Jyn and I dreamed about stealing a fancy apartment by my work and apparently now we're on the lease.
[ as she introduces him to the two new arrivals, he nods once, twice and thinks his duty is done until she asks him a question that he is not expecting at all. he he stares at her and then at both cassian and jyn because surely these two can explain what's just happened before he goes back to looking at her. ]
Move in with you?
[ oh good, his voice still works. there's obvious surprise there but at least his voice hadn't cracked like some juvenile going through puberty who'd just been asked to hold hands with a girl or something. ]
Are you serious?
[ was she serious? was this a serious question? wasn't this a conversation they should have away from two people whose names he had just learned? he's sure they are fine people but still. ]
[ cassian watches the back and forth, before it is? somehow turned on him? but it doesn't really faze him compared to poor illya apparently put on the spot. ]
[ he shrugs. ] Jyn said she found us a house. It is not like I had anywhere else to stay.
[ so he was not really asked so much as told, but he couldn't think of any real objections after his initial mistrust. ]
It is an enormous apartment, [ jyn admits with a shrug that mirrors cassian's as she settles more comfortably on their side of the compartment, tucking her legs underneath her as she leans against her totally platonic war buddy. ]
He kept shooting down all my other ideas since he demanded having a bed to sleep on. [ like some kind of entitled millennial. wanting a bed. ] Joke's on you since I still found it. Half found it.
[ she says it in that tone of voice that says she zero percent believes they're planning on using said bed just for platonic war buddy purposes. but daisy's not judging! of course not!
because... well, she's doing the same damn thing. their body language is practically mirroring. ]
[ that was...a great contribution from the russian judge, folks. he doesn't wince at least but really even he knows he could have done better than that. not that it's not true. beds are nice but he's also the type who could sleep standing up against a wall with his eyes open if need be. ]
I don't think demanding a bed is such a bad thing.
[ he immediately picks up on what daisy is implying, unlike jyn completely missing the kitchen comment. fortunately for him, his expression doesn't change and he just ]
[ stares at daisy. but thanks for the solitary, illya. ] Yes. Beds are nice. What else do you need a good bed for?
[ why! sleep on the floor! when a mattress is accessible! ]
[ you'd slept in his bed enough to know that was a fact, daisy. there were times he'd go in there and have to move you to one side because someone liked to take up a lot of space. honestly, he doesn't know how someone so small can take up so much space when she wants to. ]
And reading. Post workout breathers. Watching terrible television. Performing first aide. Really, beds are very multi functional.
[ don't tell him what to do. he'd play stupid if he wanted to. ]
[ oh, kitchen counters. there's a reminder of a nice memory. kind of strange to think about now considering how much things have changed but still nice. ]
It sounds like you might need a set of rules for your apartment that include that...very specific one about the counters.
[ team helpful over here. ]
A posted list or...something similar since there is no paper here. But it might be helpful to keep things straight.
I don't care where you have sex as long as I don't have to see it. [ she gives daisy a brief once over and then nods, yes, that is her decision. no sex on the counters while jyn is in the kitchen itself. ]
[ suddenly cassian is questioning whether or not this barbie house is actually a good idea?? ]
[ but jyn is right they are definitely not partners like that, regardless of how platonically jyn is leaning up against him. it is only now that jyn has drawn attention to what kind of partners they are not that it actually registers how she's sitting. ]
[ he doesn't move though, that'd be too obvious. ] That just seems like common courtesy, but if we do need a list, we can just get some kind of board.
[ why had this conversation taken the turn it had? he's just going to sit back and let it happen around him, refusing to really put in any thoughts of his own because what could he say that would make this better? nothing.
he clears his throat and makes a point of looking out the window. the snow's really nice. reminds him a bit of russian winters, actually. they can have their conversation about sexual encounters on kitchen surfaces, he's going to close his eyes and think of moscow. ]
[ jyn shoots daisy a thumbs up, settling a little more heavily against cassian. she already said they aren't partners, she doesn't have to defend their orbit. ]
[ right down to business. the shield agent in her appreciates the shift, even if she's not the one bothered by the topic. (she brought it up, it'd be stupid if she was.) ]
Yes. [ her hand shifts, fingertips tapping against illya's knee. hey, you, pay attention. stop daydreaming about kitchen counters. ] A lot, in some of them. Others not so much.
[ he's listening, he's listening. but, in deference to her touch, he does stop looking out the window, turning his focus completely back to those in the compartment.
he doesn't say anything since the conversation seems to have shifted away from him but he sits back and listens, at least.
they're talking about dreams and he shifts, uncomfortable, and really wishes she'd just let him think about kitchen counters for awhile longer. b]
Cassian took me to a karking ice planet and now we're going to a blizzard.
[ she'd prefer they said there was no snow in any of their dreams so she could blame it solely on cassian, but she guesses she has to give him a pass. not that she will admit it aloud. ]

In the...Barbie house?

It's an apartment, Illya. A nice apartment. There's room.
[ and then she abruptly changes the subject, redirecting attention across the compartment towards cassian. ]
Did you get asked?
[ or did jyn just manifest destiny him too? ]
no subject
[ he shrugs. ] Jyn said she found us a house. It is not like I had anywhere else to stay.

[ and then, nudging the man next to her a little with her elbow: ] Can't think of any reason why a bed might be nice, huh?
[ space cadets she'll forgive, but don't play stupid, boyfriend ]

[ yep, she got it, thanks to illya and cassian being purposefully obtuse. which is probably the last thing either of them actually wanted. ]
We're not partners like that.
