EVENT | the outer worlds foundation charity weekend
WHERE: New Amsterdam
WHEN: March 13-14
WHAT: A charity event
NOTES OR WARNINGS: Please see the OOC Planning Post for further details!
In early February, invitations begin to be dispersed to power players in various industries across New Amsterdam and other global megacities. From famous artistes (one of whom sadly never confirms his appearance) to CoolTalk influencers, banking moguls and scientific pioneers, anyone who is anyone receives a personalized, couriered invitation to a very exclusive event — a silent auction, co-hosted by Joseph Lynch and the New Amsterdam Events Committee, with all proceeds benefiting the newly minted Outer Worlds Foundation. Established after the first gubernatorial debate by Lynch and his campaign, the Trust aims to honor those whose sacrifices have paved the way for humanity's exploration of space by funding environmentally-savvy research initiatives and providing support to organizations devoted to providing a better quality of life for all those who work and live on the colonies.
Of course, even charities are rarely all that they seem. Political journalists and bloggers have long speculated that Lynch plans to capitalize on the social unrest stemming from the recent Mars colony uprisings, and with frontrunner Katelin Jovavich's recent debate missteps on this topic, the rumor mill has been hard at work pointing out just how timely a charitable trust like this one must be. Positioning himself as a champion of the underappreciated (read: exploited) citizens sent out to toil for the advancement of the elite is a savvy political move, and one that proves difficult to dismiss in the polls.
With such a politically-charged opportunity and the promise of plenty of media coverage, the event itself becomes a must-do on the social agenda of many of New Amsterdam's most recognizable names. Elin Zepatka and her philanthropic organizations are quick to lend their credo to the event, along with a selection of art pieces from her personal collection. (Rumor has it they're being donated to avoid having to catalogue their worth in her upcoming divorce.) Also on the guest list? Beyond host and gubernatorial candidate Joseph Lynch, his opposition Simone Durcell will be making an appearance. (Jovavich, notably, is not.) Employees from Ibis and Caudata Tech will also be on hand, the latter especially as a subsidiary under Durcell's management, despite corporate boards still throwing in with the front-runner. Most interestingly, however, is the fleeting promise of spotting reclusive Matek Kattan. The Displaced may remember this name from the recent Lunar New Year celebrations, when Pulsar subsidiary Tempo's newest VP of Marketing pitched in to run community meal programs. Clearly, charity outreach is just another ball this mystery man is capable of juggling.
The auction itself remains as exclusive as the invitations. With the large number of VIP attendees and the stressful year New Amsterdam has had, security remains a high priority throughout. Those without an invitation will find it difficult, if not impossible, to "sneak" their way in. However, with the influx of notoriously particular VIP attendees, the expectations also remain high. To meet them, companies involved in the auction begin to take on temporary workers, offering short-term job opportunities in everything from catering to janitorial work to even checking coats and bussing empty glasses. For those that are willing to undergo background checks and sign non-disclosure contracts, this is a lucrative opportunity to make high hourly rates — and potentially get their foot in the door for long-term employment if they impress the right person!
Of course, it wouldn't be a New Amsterdam event if the Displaced weren't given a particularly special way to participate. As a last-minute addition to the program, Caroline has worked with the New Amsterdam Events Committee to allow urban explorers and treasure hunters to submit rare, previously unseen artifacts from various areas of the globe up for auction. Members of the Displaced who have brought back items and artifacts from their voluntary (or involuntary) treks around the world may want to take this opportunity to make a few credits — or make a name for themselves as charitable members of the community, which may just earn them attention considered far more valuable than a few credits to their name. To sweeten the deal, each member of the Displaced that opts to present an item for sale at the auction will be provided an invitation for themselves and a plus-one of their choice.
As media coverage begins to speculate on the who's who on the guest list (and what they might donate for the cause), another event is organized to follow shortly after. Not satisfied with extending the olive branch of charitable goodwill to the upper echelons, Caroline and the NAEC begin to draft up an opportunity for all those affected by the recent crises in New Amsterdam and abroad to give back to their community, taking advantage of the upcoming White Day holiday to promote a special, seasonally-appropriate opportunity for giving (and getting) back.
The White Day Auction, as it's formally billed, isn't a new concept. Matchmaking parties and speed dating events have long been part of the New Amsterdam social scene, and while they typically are held in the weeks prior to Valentine's Day, the upcoming pressure to "give triple" (still referred to as sanbai in New Tokyo) means finding a suitable gift is still high on the to-do list for many of the city's population. For those that don't have a significant other... advertising alone would make it clear that securing a potential plus one for any auction winnings should be top priority.
To entice attendance, the event just so happens to be in a rather exclusive location — a mansion in the more upscale area of town, typically reserved for events like the recent masquerade ball to kick off Carnivale season. It's the perfect backdrop for CoolTalk selfies, making the first move on a certain someone, or impressing your date with your nouveau riche ensemble.
To ensure all are welcome and able to attend, admission is reasonably priced, and while attendees are encouraged to dress to suit the theme, there are no masks or other requirements to attend the event.
◉ In the east wing of the mansion, those with money to burn can explore the well-advertised Sanbai Selection. Here, potential purchasers can peruse a variety of couples' packages, all donated by local businesses and the occasional affluent individual. There are varying options here, with everything from the classic "dinner and a VR movie" arrangement to a full day's VIP experience at Riverstone's Dream River theme park, to even the more scandalous "Red Room Experience", offered by one of the Red Light District's most well-known brothels. Whether they offer a hard-to-beat discount — like two-for-one couples' massages or a prix-fixe menu at a recent Restaurant Week winning venue — or a rare experience, each of these opportunities are exclusive to White Day attendees. Many of the more popular options will be available for multiple purchasers to collect at lower prices, while some of the most exclusive and sought-after are sure to go quickly.
◉ For those who may not have a date, a bachelor's auction will be hosted later in the evening. Sponsored by one of New Amsterdam's newest craft breweries, the New Amsterdam Bachelor(ette) Auction offers a chance for those who may not have the funds to donate to offer up something else for charity. For those ready to bid, winning a date with one of these potential bachelors (or bachelorettes!) up for auction will grant access to a unique date experience, each tailored to the man or woman on offer's skills and interests. Dancing lessons, self-defense classes, art history lessons — there's a wide variety of options on the table! The Displaced are highly encouraged to sign up as potential bachelor(ette)s, or to bid on each other.
◉ In addition to the various auction opportunities, the evening offers a variety of opportunities for charitable giving! Attendees can visit the multiple full bars staffed by local culinary school students, purchase some of the winning food items from New Amsterdam Restaurant Week participants at reasonable prices, and pick up last minute gift ideas from pop-up shops — with all proceeds donated to the Foundation! Banners and signage all thank attendees for giving, and every so often, video messages from Joseph Lynch on VR screens profess his deep gratitude for the city's endless generosity, with a reminder that 'together, anything is possible.'
Welcome to the party! Just a few reminders:
▸ Players are welcome to have their characters sign up for any kind of short-term job opportunity. No special arrangements are required! If your character decides midway through the night to abandon their duties and try to mingle... well, they'll just have to hope their boss doesn't spot them first!
▸ There will be opportunities for NPC interactions during the silent auction, hosted by the mod team. Keep an eye out!
▸ Feel free to go wild with couples' package options. While most of the companies participating would be from within New Amsterdam, who knows what kind of global opportunities lay out there. If you want to utilize this offer to make connections with a new destination, check in with Plot Engagement!
▸ For Displaced opting to sign up as a Bachelor or Bachelorette, please remember that no intimacy is required. Characters can, of course, voluntarily provide things like massages or dancing lessons, but no characters should feel obligated to be anything more than professionally friendly with their bidder.
klaus mikaelson — open
He is certainly not in the same tax bracket as anyone here, but the withered old journal he found down in the caves won him access - maybe even a heap of credits by the end of the night.
He decided to channel a simpler time, moving in both a steampunk and traditional direction - something a different Klaus might wear in a different time.
When not handling his moderate amount of alcohol, (seriously, it will only be three glasses of champagne tonight), Klaus browses the different auction items, eats off of a passing tray or generally makes polite conversation all while keeping one eye on his
datefriend from across the room if need be.The second night Klaus is dressed in more metallics, taking the more muted approach. Tonight, Klaus Mikaelson will be up for auction. The date he offers comes with the collective offer of a top shelf whiskey tasting and a behind the scenes look at the New Amsterdam Art Museum thanks to a connection through his philandering boss. His boss may be a terrible human being, but he is charitable. And the proceeds are going to what he believes to be a good cause.
He's back, this time with nobody on his arm.
Still, he is friendly, and nurses the same glass of champagne that passes by on a tray when he arrives. He may even ask someone lovely to dance if he's feeling it (and he knows them.) He will be partaking in culinary confections, and eating entirely too much at each of the posted bars. You may catch him bidding on a couples' option. He is here to impress, to schmooze, and to do his charitable duty. )
[ if you have a specific scenario in mind or would like to win klaus, please hit me up at
first night (obviously), SAVE HIM KLAUS
Thinking about champagne obviously makes him think about Mark, and he doesn't want to be thinking about Mark, because then he really will become a wet blanket. He'd floated away from Klaus to chase up a tray of canapés that had caught his eye a few minutes ago, except now he's really lost, and he didn't even get a canapé in the end since the tray had been emptied by the time he got to it. Irritated, he stands on his toes for a minute to look over the heads of the sea of people to try and pick out Klaus among them.
Is that—? Nope.
Maybe that's him over there by the...? Definitely not.
Did he leave? He wouldn't.
...Or maybe he would?
Tim sighs, landing back on his feet again, and has a morose sip of his drink. And then, as if he'd been broadcasting himself as 'available' or something, he's suddenly waylaid by a woman, definitely not Displaced, who's trying very earnestly to flirt with him. This kind of thing happens rarely enough that he doesn't really know what to do with it, just kind of nods and smiles at her in what he hopes is a polite sort of way. She's quite talkative, telling him all about how she saw him from across the room anyway because he really stands out in all-white like that, it looks great with his eyes, and she's here with her boss and totally doesn't get this vibe in here anyway, it's full of so many crazy rich people, and really she's supposed to be working tonight anyway, it isn't even about a party, and ugh this must be so boring to listen to, she's so sorry, she should be asking him questions too, right, she just has to listen to her boss talk, like, all night so it's like, blurting out of her now, she doesn't even have control over it...
Tim's heart leaps as he finally spots Klaus in the crowd. He can't exactly wave him over, but a second after making eye contact he bugs his eyes out wide in the universal symbol for panic, and then jerks his head very lightly in the woman's direction, and then, for emphasis, lifts his eyebrows. ]
TO THE RESCUE
And to earn money, work a crowd and impress a friend.
Said friend is ... where did he get to?
He spots Tim before Tim sees him, embroiled in what looks to be an animated conversation with a lady he has yet to meet. Surely not one of them, it doesn't seem as the dress she wears doesn't reveal anything chest-plated. Tim has the, he'd rather be anywhere but right there, look, and Klaus takes a sip from his champagne. Amused. He doesn't approach just yet, because my she can go on, can't she?
And then Tim finds his eyes, Tim's own eyes widening in the universal sign of 'Help. god damn it' or 'Dag nammit', or something equally Southern. His eye contact is followed by an eyebrow raising and yes, Klaus should then save him, yes? From a fate worse than -- being stuck in an ongoing conversation that looks like it just won't end. He smirks to himself, ignores the glint in Tim's eye or the feeling he feels as he approaches. )
Timothy, where did you get off to?
( He smiles in the direction of the chatterbox. He switches his glass of champagne to his left hand so he can hold out his right. )
I don't believe we met. Klaus. I have something up for auction, a rather old manuscript. Am I interrupting?
no subject
We have to go talk to [ he scrambles to think of a name ] Jerry. Right now. Remember Jerry? We have to go. [ And then he remembers his manners, because his mom will kill him somehow even if she's unreachable right now, and calls over his shoulder, ] Nice to meet you bye!
no subject
As he's whisked away, Klaus remarks. )
Jerry. Really. He does sound like a charitable sort of fellow. Or, like a member of the Grateful Dead. Drowning, were you?
no subject
All too late, he lets go of Klaus' arm, flexing his fingers a few times. ] Thanks for the save.
no subject
Ambled. Really. I could've left you to your own devices and your awaiting leash.
( It's more deadpanned, as they both know Tim was not this bothered. Not to the extent that his voice indicates. )
I'd be remiss if I didn't mention you looked like you needed an out. ( Remember that lesser men have lost tongues in their time for speaking in such a tone. He doesn't say it out loud. Maybe his eyes say it. But, there's something with him and Tim that causes him to edit himself. If only slightly Tim is not aware of his past, his indiscretions, or his demons. Now is not the time to dredge them up. ) Other than your first foray into kink, how is the gala? Enjoying yourself? You know, it's around this time of night people tend to loosen up. There's no need to be jumpy - or jittery. You can relax, Timothy. See this for what it is. A shameless excuse to hobnob and make each other feel more important. You see, Caroline thinks this is charitable, that these donations are going somewhere that matters. It's all I can do not to tell her this is merely a game of Monopoly. And Mr. Moneybags - Or, Pennybags - at any rate, he is the one reaping these rewards.
no subject
Tim almost physically shakes himself out of that. ] That's a pretty pessimistic way of thinkin' about it, [ he points out, even though he agrees. This is all very transparently for show. Anyway. ] I told you I'm not much good at parties.
no subject
And I thought you were being modest. Or, overdramatic. Nervous for your first foray into New Amsterdam high society and those cosplaying as such. ( But he looks back. ) Forgive me, I thought you may enjoy a night like tonight, even if you didn't completely feel comfortable. If you're having second thoughts...

[ He used to do this with Mark all the time. Different surroundings – the cold desert nights in Afghanistan and Iraq – and for different purposes – anything to punch through the silence – but the two of them would sit around pretending they were someplace else and some other people, meeting for the first time. They'd pick characters from movies or books or TV shows, even other guys in their unit, and act like them until the other person guessed who it was. Thinking about it now makes Tim feel old. Two kids playing make-believe in the sandbox. ]
Hi. [ He holds out a hand, safe in the knowledge that nothing untoward will pass between them if Klaus plays along and shakes his hand. There's a little smile really playing around his mouth now, and it's audible in his voice. ] Don't think we've met yet, but I saw you across the room and I thought I'd come over and introduce myself.
no subject
Klaus Mikaelson. You are correct. We haven't yet met. It's not often a stranger makes the effort of introducing themselves to me, having seen me from across a room. Was it the color of my tuxedo?

First Night
Eliot was at the bar so Quentin was serving, either a tray of drinks that El gave him or anything else someone shoved into his hands and told him to serve. It made it a little more complex to try and get pictures of the things that interest him, using his neural implant, but he managed. A spy he will never be, but he's doing well enough. He spots Klaus and his date when they come in and would have gone over, but he waits until Klaus is on his own and looking at the auction items.
It gives him a very good reason to bring him a tray of appetizers. He doesn't know Klaus' date for the evening or whether the guy is one of them, so that's why he waits for his friend to be alone. )
Hungry, Monsieur?
( Quentin grins and offers him the tray. )
Your date is cute.
no subject
If you'd think Klaus would arrive at a party with you and he wouldn't keep tabs, then you'd be wrong. Klaus Mikaelson knows his allies and enemies.
He does keep one eye on Tim. In this case, Tim is across the way talking to Nathan. He is doing well enough, it seems.
Currently? He's eyeing a rather old shield of some sort. )
These markings here are Byzantine in origin.
( He's not ignoring what Quentin says. He's just mid-thought. He taps the glass as he speaks, before looking back. He gazes down at the tray and then takes something finger sandwich-y. )
Timothy? ( His date? Sure. ) And yours? Is Eliot working here as well?
no subject
If that's his name. Is he one of us? ( Quentin hasn't met him yet if he is, but he's certain there are plenty of them left that he's never spoken to. It would be nice if Klaus was there with some cute guy, it would get his mind off of other things. Distractions are necessary. )
Yeah, El's over there. ( Quentin points out a very tall dark-haired man currently bartending, unable to stop from smiling after they meet eyes briefly, but then his attention is over to Klaus again. ) He's a little worried whenever I leave his sight I'm going to end up in trouble.
no subject
Klaus' eyes find the bar and the bartender. ) Is it I who should take credit for trouble you could get up to? Or is that in your usual nature? ( His eyes find Quentin again. ) He is a handsome lad.
no subject
Quentin laughs and shakes his head.) No, not on you at all, it's my nature. I'm too curious and I like to poke at things until they make sense. ( He told Klaus that he's dead so it isn't a surprise why Eliot is so anxious whenever Quentin puts himself into situations.) He knows who he fell for. I'm here looking at the relics, work is kind of a cover.
( He blushes like he's a teenager again and nods. ) Yeah, the first time I saw him I thought I was in a dream. I mean, there were other weird things going on at the time, but ... well. ( Quentin had a crush pretty quickly, even if he didn't know it for that for awhile. )
no subject
( A certain type. Headstrong. Sure of themselves. Wouldn't let him get to them until he'd chipped away at their hardened shell and even then could never really be with them. Even with the passage of time and the mutual passing of someone they'd both loved deeply. Even if Klaus hadn't perished shortly after, of his own volition. He and Caroline may never have been able to make it work. )
Well. ( He really does love this boy, doesn't he? It's something, young love. Is it not? ) From the way he's eyeing you across this gala, I'd say he feels much the same. If not then, definitely now. ( Klaus' eyes search for Tim again, this time talking to - oh - that is Caroline he's dueling for a glass of champagne. Isn't that something. ) I don't usually admit such things, as I prefer to be left to my own devices and pursuits, but I did provide his suit. ( SOMEONE give a compliment on it. His date is dashing and it should be acknowledged. And it pairs with his. Even without trying. )
no subject
( Quentin's not blind, he's well aware that Klaus is handsome, charming, and brilliant. All of his friends are. He can't help but be drawn to people who shine, like a moth to a flame. He surrounds himself with people he wants to be more like, as if he can take on some of their best traits if he tries hard enough. He hopes this Timothy guy appreciates being Klaus' arm candy for the night, but he can't imagine how anyone wouldn't.
He really and truly loves Eliot. The 'we've already lived an entire lifetime together and I want a second go' type of love. It still surprises him that Eliot doubted it for a second; Quentin thinks he's so damn obvious.) Apparently he called dibs on me from the first moment he saw me, but then never followed through.
( So Quentin assumed his flirting was harmless and insincere, and took it as a friendship trait that he accepted greedily. Little did he know. He glances over to Timothy again and takes the time now to admire the suit. ) I was going to say, the guy has great style, but it's your style, so. ( He laughs. ) What's he like?
no subject
( Curious, yes, but he does keep to himself and his thoughts to himself. He's not sure Tim's traveled all that much outside of his military experience, but that is still something to be proud of. It does denote an air of maturity and duty. And not something Klaus takes lightly. )
Can you say never, now that he has? Even in death, you have found one another. ( He does take a moment. ) Your death, anyway. ( Not that he's taking - or has ever taken - death, lightly.
Hey, flirting with different people means different things. It's how flirting works. )
He is - polite. Quiet. Pensive. But, he is brave and he has lived long past his years. He is an old soul in that regard. His sense of humor is ... well, he is quite brash, and not something I am used to. Nor had I ever appreciated. ( Until now, he implies. )
no subject
( It's funny, because Quentin never really had a moment of gay panic, so to speak. He knew he was attracted to men. He was shy enough with girls that it just didn't happen with guys either. But it didn't occur to him to really talk much about what seemed obvious to him. Maybe that had been a mistake when being with someone so gunshy. )
He thinks I died for him. It weighs him down. But I'd rather we both live for each other instead. ( Klaus is the only person he's talked about his death with, so he doesn't flinch away from the subject. If anything it's a relief to talk to someone who understands, who is also in that position, who doesn't have as much baggage attached. )
After a thousand years, if someone can surprise you or throw you off what you're used to, that could be an exciting thing, right? ( Quentin smiles at him. It's weird, feeling so in tune with a relative stranger, but he bonds quickly. )
no subject
( Perhaps. Klaus has never been afraid of speaking his feelings, especially how passionately they are. Except, when it comes to the people he cares deeply for. It takes him a long time to say anything. He says what he needs to with looks, with grand gestures, with conversation, and sometimes with cutting them off completely. Or, giving them reason to hate him. )
Then express that. But, also, make sure you practice what exactly you preach. You must show him. ( But, he chews on that for a second. ) If he truly believes you perished and for him, he may feel the guilt that comes with it. You could try to dissuade it. Focus on what you have here, your lives together, your bartending, your waiting - I am sure you have a semblance of a sex life. That is a large part of what can make a relationship, what can - make you feel alive.
( Klaus smiles at that, however, nodding. )
In certain cases, Quentin. In this case, you aren't off. That may be the case here. ( And since they're in such a deep conversation all ready. ) I very rarely am surprised or thrown, truthfully. Is it obvious this may be? Exciting?
no subject
( Quentin would like to see Alice again, obviously, but he wouldn't wish her here. She'd hate to be stuck in a place like this with no way out and no magic. And it would hurt her, seeing Eliot and him together. He is more concerned that Eliot would be jealous and insecure, but they could work it out. He knows that. ) But that's one thing the empathy is good for. There's no doubting the way anyone feels when you can just touch them and know.
( Some people here might not enjoy that in a relationship, or in a budding one, but for Eliot and Quentin it's been extremely helpful. Quentin nodded with what Klaus was saying, to show that living here was better, to make the best of this place, and he really was. He glances over at Eliot one more time but knows he can't simply stare at him all night, and besides, he is trying not to blush at Klaus' reference to their sex life. Yes he's a grown man who blushes. It happens.)
It totally would be exciting. ( He grins over at him. ) This is our second chance at life, I would say chase the things that make you feel alive too. Especially if they're cute brash guys who look good in a suit.
no subject
( Some modern turn of phrase? The three of them shared something together, most likely including Quentin's son it sounded like. )
Then you fall on the side of the, our bond is a benefit and not a hinderance, argument. ( He takes that in, too. Klaus is too prideful and too secretive to involve his own empathy, even if it helped read others. Klaus believes he's a good reader in the first place. He reads people well. And that aside, when he had power, he could always tell when someone is lying. That is surely something he misses. )
And if my past hadn't included cute, brash guys.
