[ Again, Maine anticipates an attack. Readies himself to move. To lunge forward and plunge the knife in. To kill. When faced with an enemy that wants to destroy people he cares about, what other option is there? Better to hit hard and eliminate the threat immediately.

But the attack isn't physical. It's … a drawing. An image of a dead woman. Maine's teammate, C.T.

Maine's grip tightens on the handle of the knife. Anger and disgust rise up inside of him, and—

He gets a message. A notification at the corner of his vision. Church.

Church is here. He can't… He needs to protect Church. He needs to be here for Church. He can't risk getting thrown out of the safehouse — or worse. He has to keep his shit together. Focus, Agent. Focus. What's the mission?

With a thought, Maine opens the message. Sends a response asking if it would be a bad idea to kill Ephemera. A few seconds later, Church responds:
probably. i am not dealing with learning how to walk AND breaking you out of jail
Right. Church can't even walk properly here. Maine can't take out his anger by driving the kitchen knife deep into Ephemera's chest. He has to protect Church.

At last, Maine releases a held breath. Starts chopping again, unaware of how long his hand hovered a half-inch from the food, trembling with rage. He doesn't look at Ephemera, though he's aware of where the other man is. He keeps talking to Church, forcing himself to focus on that connection. On the fact Church is here, and that Maine can't afford to fuck things up.

As for Ephemera? He can stay if he wants, but Maine is determined not to engage. They're done. ]
