EVENT #009 AFTERMATH LOG

WHO: Everyone! Monsters, trains, and New Amsterdam citizens.
WHERE: New Amsterdam, a train, and New Magellan.
WHEN: May 3, 2512
WHAT: The aftermath of the simulation.
NOTES OR WARNINGS: Mentions of monsters, as well as deaths and memorials.

> EVENT #009 AFTERMATH LOG

The simulation ends abruptly. Whether someone was in the cold and artificially lit underground New Amsterdam or rushing the work camps to set every inch of them on fire, they'll wake up wherever they were before the simulation started. Given that it came down midday, many are likely to either be at work or enjoying a day off. The city takes a couple hours to "wake up" and "recover" from the long and traumatic period of time. Many of the New Amsterdam citizens will have to check a calendar to see how long it's been, and they'll also want to take care of any bodily functions and shove some food into their faces. While Judas' Suspended Animation helped a lot in this arena, everyone who's waking up will have to make up the difference for themselves.

After a couple hours left in recovery, people all around New Amsterdam flock to the streets to take in the state of the world. Numerous local corporations send out messages announcing that all employees will be paid for their time spent in the simulation, and that everyone will have a brief reprieve from work while New Amsterdam takes inventory on itself. Anyone in corporate jobs will have five days to take care of themselves, while anyone working in restaurants or lower-end jobs will only have two days to get themselves back together before they're expected to return to work.

Once everyone takes to the streets, they'll find a New Amsterdam covered in green and trees. It marks a striking difference to the cold, lifeless underground New Amsterdam that was present in the simulation. Many take to camping out on the first night, relishing the fresh air and lack of bustling city life that New Amsterdam has to offer. These same campers will need to move the following morning, but there will be little enforcement of any quick movement on that front.

On a more somber note, Governor Lydia Gill-Jade gives her final address to the city. She announces that New Amsterdam is the strongest megacity in the world, and that it's ready to persevere and prevail over any and all obstacles. She asks that everyone remember the lives lost when the simulation was lifted. By now, there are a couple hundred deaths reported, and among them are Katelin Jovavich and Matek Kattan (AKA "Ball"). Memorials spring up around the city in honor of these losses. At the end of her address, Gill-Jade declares that she's stepping down as Governor of New Amsterdam, effective immediately.

> NEW MAGELLAN AND THE MANY MONSTERS

Thanks to Ian, the simulation has come to an end in New Amsterdam. Anyone who went into the laboratory will need an exit strategy. What comes next? Daenerys will be setting off an EMP bomb as everyone leaves the laboratory, and will have set a large majority of the monsters on fire. But what about any that might be chasing them out, and how do they prevent them from following? It's time to have a plan to get out of dodge, so to speak. That's assuming that anyone has a plan. The accelerated timeline has meant that everyone is moving without having all the bricks laid.

Either way, now that Cassius has been transferred and is mostly secure in the hands of the Displaced, it's probably a good idea to not dawdle for too long. The lab is thoroughly on fire, the monsters are up for a chase, and it's time to get moving. Should they leave the building itself burning in the meantime? Then again, is that really anyone's biggest concern?

The problem is: where to? A quick hop back to New Amsterdam won't be on the horizon. The gate there is still down after the event, as recovering it fell by the wayside. If anyone wants to visit New Amsterdam, they'll have to fast travel to a city close by (New Prague is a great choice!) and take a train ride home.

That's right: it's train log time again!

> GATE BUSINESS

While people are either heading back from their adventures abroad or eating a lot of protein to boost their energy, there is still that little problem with the gate in New Amsterdam. Tony Stark identified the missing objects there, but the acceleration of everything meant that the gate never got fixed up. Now, it's up to the Displaced to put together how to make this gate work! If they have a relic sitting at home, wouldn't it be worth trying to see if they can slot it back in there? It might take a bit of teamwork, but this is the type of puzzle the Displaced can piece together.

The only thing that the Displaced might want to do is look for additional clues or information for how the original slots got changed up. When did it happen and who had the means to do that? Even if the fast travel system is back up, will there be any chance of someone messing things up again in the future?

> FINAL OOC NOTES

And that's all for our ninth event, folks! Please direct any aftermath questions to our Wrap Up post! In terms of the gate, we're happy with assuming that the gate is back up and running by time the arrival log is posted on June 13th.

Thanks again for helping make this a great event!

I've been thinking about Mars too.

[ of course she has. jyn has never been one to yearn for the stars the way most pilots she knows do, but her wanderlust is real and after more than six months spent in one place. the stability and security is nice by she is lyra's daughter at heart and exploring new places fills the hole of abandonment. ]

If we can activate the gates, what is stopping us from building a new one?

To live? [Clarke can't help but sound surprised. While there are colonies, it doesn't seem as if the conditions on them lead to something that could be workable, at least not in their lifetimes. But then: Mars had never been an option for her people. Thinking of it for Jyn is odd for the same reason.]

To tell you the truth, I hadn't considered it. My people hadn't looked at any other planets to live after we ended up in space, and that meant that somewhere like Mars was off the table.

[It could be on here? The look on her face seems to say: "I don't know, I'm not an explorer or scientist," because ...

Well.

She isn't.]

No, not living there. The atmosphere is still too unstable, we would die. [ she says all that in a rush but with certainty, taking another sip of her wine. ]

But the colonies. Imagine how much they could benefit from qualified medical care and supplies? Actual waste management.

[ she gestures expansively and despite having just said her days of giving speeches are over it is clear that the little ember of rebellion that had kept her alive all this time and grew into the flame that lit the rebellion up is still there. a rebellious spirit, jyn has only recently had the ability to fight for someone other than herself. ]

A fresh fruit.

[That was her life. The Ark was essentially the colonies, so it's hard to listen to it and see the hope in it. No, Clarke can understand why the colonies were less than prepared all too easily. They couldn't guess what would come from such a venture.]

The Ark was something like the colonies. It failed, too, but we didn't have resources available or ways to restock like they should here. I assume they have hydroponic farms up there, but it's hard to say. [And even harder to know how good the technology is. Clarke can't speak too knowledgeably beyond the experiences of someone who had a mother on the council and a father who was an engineer trying to do right by people.]

You make it sound like they could be good, though. Like they shouldn't just be a bridge. [It's the type of thinking Monty employed.

Clarke doesn't say it. No, this last remark is to encourage Jyn to keep going.]

Bespin was a gas giant in my galaxy, like Jupiter here. Instead of trying to terraform the planet they built a colony above it, Cloud City, fueled by the gas they mined from the planet.

[ cloud city was effectively her proposal for jupiter but it went nowhere despite the sound science. for all their technological advances, earth is woefully far behind.

her shoulders lift in a shrug. ]

Everything is useless without hyperspeed anyhow. Can't adequately supply any colony if it takes six months to over a year to bring food or medicine or doctors, the ones that are there are probably overworked or die on the journey.

Were people happy there? On Bespin? [It's what stands out to her the most. The idea of finding a place in space that would work. It had worked for Monty and the others long enough, but they were all eager to get back to their people. What if they were able to take and make a colony work for them? But then—she knows that wouldn't work for some. It might not even work for her.]

I know about providing food, but it's about having the engineers and the supplies to eventually solve an issue. On the Ark, we didn't have solutions like you might here. But then, we didn't have hyperspeed, either. It's why it took us over a hundred years to get to our next planet.

I've never been. It has gaming houses, very luxurious, could never afford it. [ much like the moon now, though it is on jyn's bucket list. a lunar vacation seems more achievable, despite the prohibitive cost, than any of the other colonies. ]

Happy enough, I suppose, since they weren't subjugated by the Empire.

[ at least not as far as jyn knows. the war might have changed things but she didn't press han for the nitty gritty details and now he is gone and there is no one to fill in the blanks for her. ]

I don't know enough about hyperspeed to give the idea to any of the scientists here. [ she knows about coaxium but she doesn't know the make up of it or if it can be mined or duplicated on earth, she doesn't know the maths of how to apply it, she only knows about coaxium because enfys nest brought it to saw and saw had allowed her to come along to the handoff.

it's effectively useless knowledge since it can't help the people that need help. ]
strove: (did you know about shark week?)

[personal profile] strove 2020-07-18 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
That does give me an idea, though. [Even if Jyn herself can't do the math, that doesn't mean they can't outsource it. They've had enough turnover in recent months that they may have some people sitting with untapped potential, even if they haven't announced it.]

If we're looking to help this world, we could make it a part of a personal mission statement to help their technology complete their missions. Some of us would know enough. Not anyone from my world, but ... most likely someone from another.

[ jyn can think of a couple people, making a note of them as she sips at the wine. cassian can surely help with the maths for redesigning ships to make them capable of hyperspeed so they won't break apart on the trip.

she hums thoughtfully. ]

A mission statement.

[ clarke would suit the hierarchy of the alliance, jyn thinks. the alliance was, despite what the empire claimed, more than the ragtag bunch of assholes that had stolen rogue one. they had a mission statement, a declaration, they had a high council and a karking cabinet. she has mostly come around to the alliance, still bitter about some things, and morningstar tends to remind her of the broad strokes of the rebellion. it's a wonder clarke hasn't joined. ]

You make us sound like a cohesive group.
strove: (would they taste like alligators?)

[personal profile] strove 2020-07-31 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
[Clarke makes a thoughtful sound at that. It's not how she meant to sound, but Jyn is right. Sometimes Clarke wishes that the reality of their situation was one where they could be a united group, but she also fights to remind others that they can't be that.

Not easily, anyway.]

It's a habit, [she admits, offering a wry smile.] But there might be enough of us who'd join in on the effort if we tried. And I've made enough pleas toward people to allow my people to stay. It's good to have a plan in mind. [A statement, if you will.]
