EVENT #009 AFTERMATH LOG
WHERE: New Amsterdam, a train, and New Magellan.
WHEN: May 3, 2512
WHAT: The aftermath of the simulation.
NOTES OR WARNINGS: Mentions of monsters, as well as deaths and memorials.
The simulation ends abruptly. Whether someone was in the cold and artificially lit underground New Amsterdam or rushing the work camps to set every inch of them on fire, they'll wake up wherever they were before the simulation started. Given that it came down midday, many are likely to either be at work or enjoying a day off. The city takes a couple hours to "wake up" and "recover" from the long and traumatic period of time. Many of the New Amsterdam citizens will have to check a calendar to see how long it's been, and they'll also want to take care of any bodily functions and shove some food into their faces. While Judas' Suspended Animation helped a lot in this arena, everyone who's waking up will have to make up the difference for themselves.
After a couple hours left in recovery, people all around New Amsterdam flock to the streets to take in the state of the world. Numerous local corporations send out messages announcing that all employees will be paid for their time spent in the simulation, and that everyone will have a brief reprieve from work while New Amsterdam takes inventory on itself. Anyone in corporate jobs will have five days to take care of themselves, while anyone working in restaurants or lower-end jobs will only have two days to get themselves back together before they're expected to return to work.
Once everyone takes to the streets, they'll find a New Amsterdam covered in green and trees. It marks a striking difference to the cold, lifeless underground New Amsterdam that was present in the simulation. Many take to camping out on the first night, relishing the fresh air and lack of bustling city life that New Amsterdam has to offer. These same campers will need to move the following morning, but there will be little enforcement of any quick movement on that front.
On a more somber note, Governor Lydia Gill-Jade gives her final address to the city. She announces that New Amsterdam is the strongest megacity in the world, and that it's ready to persevere and prevail over any and all obstacles. She asks that everyone remember the lives lost when the simulation was lifted. By now, there are a couple hundred deaths reported, and among them are Katelin Jovavich and Matek Kattan (AKA "Ball"). Memorials spring up around the city in honor of these losses. At the end of her address, Gill-Jade declares that she's stepping down as Governor of New Amsterdam, effective immediately.
Thanks to Ian, the simulation has come to an end in New Amsterdam. Anyone who went into the laboratory will need an exit strategy. What comes next? Daenerys will be setting off an EMP bomb as everyone leaves the laboratory, and will have set a large majority of the monsters on fire. But what about any that might be chasing them out, and how do they prevent them from following? It's time to have a plan to get out of dodge, so to speak. That's assuming that anyone has a plan. The accelerated timeline has meant that everyone is moving without having all the bricks laid.
Either way, now that Cassius has been transferred and is mostly secure in the hands of the Displaced, it's probably a good idea to not dawdle for too long. The lab is thoroughly on fire, the monsters are up for a chase, and it's time to get moving. Should they leave the building itself burning in the meantime? Then again, is that really anyone's biggest concern?
The problem is: where to? A quick hop back to New Amsterdam won't be on the horizon. The gate there is still down after the event, as recovering it fell by the wayside. If anyone wants to visit New Amsterdam, they'll have to fast travel to a city close by (New Prague is a great choice!) and take a train ride home.
That's right: it's train log time again!
While people are either heading back from their adventures abroad or eating a lot of protein to boost their energy, there is still that little problem with the gate in New Amsterdam. Tony Stark identified the missing objects there, but the acceleration of everything meant that the gate never got fixed up. Now, it's up to the Displaced to put together how to make this gate work! If they have a relic sitting at home, wouldn't it be worth trying to see if they can slot it back in there? It might take a bit of teamwork, but this is the type of puzzle the Displaced can piece together.
The only thing that the Displaced might want to do is look for additional clues or information for how the original slots got changed up. When did it happen and who had the means to do that? Even if the fast travel system is back up, will there be any chance of someone messing things up again in the future?
And that's all for our ninth event, folks! Please direct any aftermath questions to our Wrap Up post! In terms of the gate, we're happy with assuming that the gate is back up and running by time the arrival log is posted on June 13th.
Thanks again for helping make this a great event!

If anything, Meadowlark's world has granted them the chance to do that to some degree, while still keeping them busy enough that they don't start pulling their hair out. Sora wouldn't say he wants to be here, but if it's his only option, it could be worse.
He misses everyone else, of course. Kairi most of all. But Riku and Roxas are here, and that makes a big difference. ]
You guys...
[ Sora swallows back on the tightness in his throat. It's nice to know that so many people care that much, and he blinks against the stinging in his eyes as that knowledge settles in over his chest. ]
Thank you. For always coming to find me and bring me back.
no subject
He knows that his friend needs to expect that.
So, instead, he bobs his head forward.]
Always.
[Riku knows now that he can't protect Sora from his decisions. He has to accept them as they are.
At the same time, that doesn't mean he's ready to lose his best friend. It makes sense to find him, to bring him back. Isn't it as simple as that? Right now, he has an answer. He just wishes that it hadn't taken so long to finally get some headway.]
Leave it to you to make it a lot harder on us this time. [There he is, teasing just a bit.] But don't worry. We know what we're doing.
[Just like Sora knew the risk he was taking.
They all did. That doesn't mean they'd give up on him. What he did was right, after all.]

It's just one word, but a comforting one all the same. Sora doesn't purposefully place himself into situations where Riku has to come and drag him back from the brink, and he never meant to make a habit of it either. At one point, way back at the beginning, it had been more the other way around. Sora had done everything he could to haul Riku out of the darkness, even if most of the legwork had fallen to Riku himself.
The teasing is meant to be harmless and Sora does his best not to take it too personally. He feels bad that he's making things difficult again, even if he wouldn't do it differently if given the chance.
Kairi deserved to be home and be safe. So, whatever the cost? Of course he would do it. ]
Hey, I didn't make it that hard. [ He sticks his tongue out at Riku, then draws his arms up to rest behind his head. ] You found your way back to me, didn't you?
[ The hard part will be getting both of them home, and making sure that it sticks. For now, though, they're here together and that doesn't seem so bad. ]
no subject
They're having the same thought, really. How do they get Sora back from here?]
I didn't remember being here. Not Nill or Rey or anyone else. I don't even think my dreams were of this world. [No matter the similarities in some ways. He'd had that dream enough that he can recall it now that he's back here. When he says "I don't even think," what he really means is "I know it wasn't this world." And that's despite it looking a touch like New Tokyo.]
But we'll figure that out. It might all come back to the door to this world, and how it's bringing so many people here. And why we can't stay.
no subject
I'm just glad you remember now. [ Sora frowns to himself, a hand lifting to scratch at the side of his head. ] Trying to catch you up on everything would have taken all day!
[ And of course, people like Nill and Rey would have been devastated to find that Riku didn't remember them. So all things considered, the situation could be way worse. Sora will just hold onto that.
When Riku speaks of the door to this world, Sora sighs, breaking off to walk to the edge of the roof and look out over the city covered in green. It's a breathtaking sight in its own way, and he finds he can't really be that mad about the plants everywhere, even if they're causing issues. ]
It all comes down to getting our powers back, right? [ He sets his palm against his chest, feels the steady beat of his heart. ] If we could do that, we'd be able to find the heart of this world, open up the lanes between worlds, and get everyone back to where they belonged.
[ It'd be so simple.
And clean.]no subject
[Both Riku and Sora had their power to awaken at the time, but even then, there were limitations. Riku doesn't think that the Displaced were connected then the way they are now: able to freely pass between dreams, able to share powers as if it's common place, and more. But they didn't have a firm grip on their powers.
And people needed help, even if those people weren't willing to accept what they had to offer.
Oddly enough? Riku's never worried that their solutions might not be accepted here. It feels like something they can worry about another day.
He follows Sora, stopping just behind him. His hand reaches out for a moment, but then drops as he decides not to take his shoulder.]
Too bad we can't make the dreams happen. Not yet. We could work on it.
no subject
The idea is to train further, to get some sort of control over how they interact with their dreams, and maybe one day? They could find their way back there. It's something that Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji have spoken of as well: dream training.
Sensing Riku standing right behind him, Sora turns to face him. Even if his back is to the edge of the building now, he doesn't seem the least bit disturbed by that.
He smiles and nods. ]
We've got to get practicing. To try and reach out for each other every night when we fall asleep. If we can keep finding each other in our dreams, then maybe we can start to learn how to control when it happens.
[ He lifts his hand to give Riku a thumbs up. If anyone can do this, it's them. They've already got experience with it, after all! ]
Plan?
no subject
Little does he know that Sora will be gone here soon, and he'll have to go right back to it.]
We can try sometime later today. See how it goes. Unless ... well. Unless you'd like to head out there. See how people are doing.
[A beat.]
Uh, not that you can't. But maybe, you know. They might want you to stick around. I could come with you.
no subject
Somehow, the idea of that doesn't really bother him that much.
Riku's a bit stilted as he suggests how they could spend their day, but Sora just grins, heading over to the door that will take them back downstairs. ]
We can do both! Head out for a bit, then come back when we're tired and practice with the dreams. Should probably find something to eat, too.
[ Riku's back, which means that everything feels like it's in its proper place again. It makes it that much easier for Sora to forge ahead. ]
