（ the cow ain't his — he's just makin' sure it survives its first few days of life after its mama rejected it at birth. but he can pass a name along to old ezekiel with a fair chance of havin' it stick.

since adam sat down easy enough, gene holds the bottle out for him to take if he wants to. ）

I'm terrible with names.

( more like, he usually avoids choosing them so he doesn't go with something terrible. but he does take the offered bottle, murmuring a "thank you" and shifts back to give the calf more room to work with.

it reminds him of home; of the barns, of opal's shrill laughter as she galloped around the fields chasing fireflies and grasshoppers, of ronan's dream creatures that would wander close by on occasion. of all the things he remembers wanting to leave before but ultimately fell in love with. )

He's cute though.

（ gene gives the calf a comforting pat to its haunch as it strains to get back to the bottle. hungry little devil, he. cute as all get-out, though, an' soft as a cloud. ）

Why don't we go with Benny, then?

Benny sounds like a perfectly respectable name for a cow.

( generic, but better than tire iron or whatever new intense dramatic name ronan would decide to come up with. adam holds the bottle up right above benny's mouth so he can latch onto it again, hums soft. )

My boyfriend has a massive sprawl of land back home. Full of cows, chickens, the whole bit. ( this is just an excuse to brag about ronan, don't mind him. ) I've always liked watching him with them.

（ he may never get over the ease with which so many folks he's met here talk about their significant others of the same sex like it ain't nothin'. gene looks at him a moment, mouth quirked up in some fond nostalgia, an' then he's back to pettin' the cow. ）

Somethin' about watchin' someone you love handle a helpless creature with kindness, I suppose.

He likes to act like he's not the sort.

( ronan is all rough edges, smile so sharp you could cut yourself on it. piercing blue eyes narrowed into a glare meant to scare off intruders. he carries an intensity with him that wards off strangers, that makes people think twice before approaching him. but adam has watched him with opal, with the farm animals. with the small barn mice pressed up close to his cheek, their breath fluttering against his stupid pale face. )

But I watched him raise a raven from when she was still just a tiny little thing that could barely move and needed to be fed every two hours. And he's not as stealthy as he thinks he is.

（ that was the thing that first drew him to alex. the man found a kitten in italy, an' packed it from the remains of a shelled out barn two towns over, carin' for it all the while. he'd surrendered it finally to little girl who'd promised to look after it, speaking to her in italian gene hadn't even been aware he'd known until then. even though things soured later, it's still a good memory of another time. ）

It's nice you have that, though. He's here, ain't he?

( if gene's assuming it's probably because he saw them together when they first dropped down, and was able to pick it up. it doesn't bother adam any, because ronan is -- the one thing in his life he talks about openly. their being together, the rest of it gets censored to exclude anything that could be considered magical and mythical. adam hasn't hesitated to talk about his boyfriend, how great he is, how much he cares for him. )

（ he says it with a laugh, the sound apparently draws the attention of two beagles sleeping indoors. they scamper out through an appropriately-sized hole cut into the door for them and come to nose at adam curiously, though they're polite enough. they don't jump up or bark. the littler one seems bolder, but that's izzy for you. gene's expression is fond as he looks on. ）

Lord, we'll have the whole farm here in a tick if we ain't careful. These girls are Izzy and Derry.
