[ most days are uneventful. someone calls in an animal, jyn picks up the animal, jyn puts the animal outside where it belongs. sometimes she gets to yell at people for fishing illegally but as she would just as soon let that slide, she is mostly on animal wrangling duty.

like now, with what she is told is a horse that was found drinking water from someone's water reclamation barrel. jyn had managed to stop it from running away, in that she'd used a power she'd only used once before and physically stopped it from doing anything, but now she has a horse staring dolefully at her while she figures out how to transport the horse from the apartment building to the wall. ]

Now what? [ she is talking to the horse, who does not talk back. ] Maybe a leash?

[ the horse huffs and jyn glowers. ]

Yes, thank you for your contribution.

( ever since her conversation with nile, she's been thinking about horses. it's been...so long since she's gotten to ride that she finds that she misses it. she misses it much, much more than she thought she would.

so, when she comes upon a woman talking to her horse, andy stops and stares because certainly this can't be a coincidence. this has to mean something, like she was fated to come upon this scene and do something about it.

for a moment, all she does is just watch. she watches the woman and she watches the woman talk to the horse and when the horse doesn't talk back, she chuckles. )

Did the horse talk back and I just missed it?

He did but it was mostly profanity.

[ jyn looks up from the horse, slowly, like she's afraid the horse will bolt or bite her or both — its teeth are huge and its face is huge and she doesn't know how far back the teeth go or if its jaw unhinges like a snake and it can swallow her whole.

eventually her eyes settle on the woman.

well.

andy looks the same as from the aerie, a little more scruffy but that makes sense since they're not the 1% there anymore. jyn looks like the off brand mexican cheetos version of herself in the aerie: messy hair, rumpled wildlife protection and services uniform, healing scratches on her forearms and dirt on her knees. ]

Still got your creepy power from the Aerie?

( it's a reminder that she doesn't want to hear but she can't really ignore either. it happened, it's a part of her and this woman obviously remembers it. after a second of thought, andy remembers why.

she sighs and shrugs one shoulder. )

I haven't exactly tried to use it on anyone. So, hopefully not.

( she doesn't want to be that person. )

I'm sorry if I used it on you.

[ jyn waves her hand, dismissive, and there doesn't seem to be any heat in her placid expression. while jyn can hold a grudge for decades because she is a petty child, emphasis on child, she can't begrudge andy for using her powers on her. jyn was a little twat in the aerie. she deserved it. ]

I don't care.

[ and that's that. jyn moves on like it was nothing at all. ]

Do you know anything about horses? Do they have leashes?

[scythias]

( andy can't help the lift of her eyebrows when jyn just brushes the whole thing off. she'd been prepared to make amends and do what needed to be done.

but apparently she doesn't have to. she waits to see if there's going to be more to it but no, that's it. )

They have bridles. And reins when you're riding the horse. But a bridle is what you're going to need if you want to control the horse and not hurt them.

[ she is too tired of all this petty bullshit going around. andy didn't mean it, jyn definitely deserved it, and jyn actually does still have the power she had in the aerie so. ]

...bridle, [ she repeats, jotting it down as a note in case this happens again, they will need the supplies on hand. much like when she jotted down the note about rabies inoculations. ]

Haven't got one of those on account of horses having gone extinct. [ the horse whinnies and once again jyn addresses it like he has spoken. ] Don't be a baby, we've all been dead before.

Easy.

( it's the horse she speaks to, not jyn as she steps closer and puts a hand on its neck, trying to calm it with a simple touch and some easy affection. )

What are you trying to do? Lead her somewhere?

( it's a fortunate thing the horse hasn't taken off just yet. )

Yeah, back outside the wall to the rest of the... herd.

[ horses have hooves, that's a herd animal, right? like banthas and goats. at comfortable jyn seems with the animal, she clearly has zero idea how she is going to achieve that with no bridle and no other horse accoutrements. her power stopped the horse, she doesn't know if it will do anything else. ]

No one here has experience with horses anymore and I've never been on a planet with horses. [ a beat. ] Except this one now.

I've ridden them a few times.

( a few times. that's an understatement. she smiles, stepping up closer to the horse and sliding her hand along its snout, trying to calm it. )

They're missing out if they don't have experience. I love horses.

( she gives the horse's nose a pat before she glances at jyn. )
