for once, she doesn't look like herself in it — well, she does, but the normal skin tone, absent of any tattoos, and her blonde hair grown out long beyond her shoulders, not to mention the glasses jammed onto her nose, are all signs that she's dreaming of the past. this is arkham asylum, home to some of gotham's most infamous and notorious criminals and psychopaths, and for a time, dr. harleen quinzel was their expert psychiatrist.
the interior of the room is dark, shadowed, less in focus beyond the man sitting at the small table, wrapped up tight in a straitjacket with all the bells and whistles and straps on it and not saying much of anything at the moment — but there is that laugh, low and cackling, almost like he groans it out as he looks at her. ]
Dr. Quin-zel. [ she remembers that voice, sitting across from her. so many sessions that had turned into him asking to see her again, asking when she'd be back. watching it now, she feels removed from it, almost like it's a scene playing out around her whether she wants to exist in her part or not.
and then she turns, briefly, and notices someone in her periphery, someone who's never been there when she's had this dream before, not once. ]
I'm sorry, I'm with another patient right now. You'll have to come back later.

Maybe it's the way the environment feels almost suffocating to him, confining, like he's not supposed to be allowed out. His throat tightens slightly at the notion; he's spent a fair portion of his life trying to avoid ending up in a place like this. Which gives him a hint that maybe he isn't here, not really - he hasn't ever ended up somewhere like this - but it doesn't erase the feeling, and it's a sensation disturbing enough that it completely takes over, makes his hair stand on end, throws any logic out the window.
He hates the man the second he hears his voice. Something way too familiar in that. But it's easy to ignore him when he catches sight of her face, when she speaks to him. He doesn't recognize her - everything he knows about her decidedly not on display here - but at the same time, he does. The oppressiveness of the room lifts slightly, and, just to confirm, ]

and that's how they end up here, at the chemical factory, overlooking those giant bubbling vats on the raised catwalk. only harley's not standing in her own body now; she's off to the side, watching it play out from a different angle this time. a spectator to her own life. ]
This was it.
[ if she's noticed someone else here with her the entire time, this is the first instance she's acknowledged it, voice almost distant and softer than her normal sing-song tones.
she watches him reach up to touch past!harleen's face, looks at that lovestruck expression — or what she thought was love, at the time, but now knows was something twisted and reshaped until it was passed off that way. ]
This was the moment everythin' changed. [ time seems to slow down, like even her subconscious is holding its breath. ] Y'know, I almost don't remember what I was thinkin', other than just... wantin' him to love me. To stay.
