（ gene's voice is warm, an' when she reaches out to pet the calf he adjusts his grip on the little guy, rubbing between his ears to calm him. gene's a man what seems perfectly at ease about anywhere he's ever been, but there's a special affinity here. for this house, this porch, this place. agathine will always be his first real love, no matter all the other places he's been. new york, tunisia, ireland, on through france an' belgium — he's seen wonders, sure, but he's a simple man. ）

He'll grow up before too long, but it's a treat to see 'em as babies.
